The 2012 Global Food Policy Report
by the International Food Policy Research Institute reviews food policy developments and trends with chapter-by-chapter
discussions of major food policy developments, high-quality research,
and perspectives of farmers from around the world. It also charts the path
forward with a call to action on gender rights, employment in agriculture
for youth in Africa, a needed evolution of US and EU support for their
farmers, and regional policy reforms to promote food and
nutrition security.
The world
food system is still in a vulnerable position in 2012. As the 2015 deadline for
the Millennium Development Goals approaches, progress toward
halving the proportion of people suffering from hunger is not on track.
Improvements have been made by some countries but for 2013, commitments made in
preceding years have to be translated into decisive actions.
Agreement was reached at the Rio+20 summit to incorporate environmental sustainability
into the economic policies in order to achieve "green growth". Two goals—Zero Net Land
Degradation and the Zero Hunger Challenge—were launched during the event. Yet,
there is a need to establish mecanism that will ensure the implementation of
these commitments according to the report.
